They believe that, once they can train a champion bird, making a fortune overnight will not be a dream (Shen, 2007). Taiwanese pigeon racing is a prevalent activity in suburbs or rural areas. There are about thirty thousand people who are from all walks of life like workers, civil servants, professions and bosses engaging in this activity (Wen, 2011; Shen, 2007). It is not difficult to notice pigeon lofts on the top of buildings or in the farms; sometimes, it is also possible to spot a flock of pigeons flying around the loft. After the boy manages to steal the pig, with the sow raging at His heels, Mrs. Whipple takes the pig from the boy without showing gratitude for the great favor He did. On another occasion, Mr. and Mrs. Whipple allow the boy to lead a full grown bull home. Both knowing that the bull could easily tear the boy to pieces, they still allow him to bring the animal three miles home. She mustn’t make a sound nor a move; she mustn’t get the bull started. The bull heaved his head aside and horned the air at a fly. Her voice burst out of her in a shriek, and she screamed at Him to come on, for God’s sake. He didn’t seem to hear her clamor, but kept on twirling His switch and limping on, and the bull lumbered along behind him as gently as a calf. Mrs. Whipple stopped calling and ran towards the house, praying under her breath: â€Å"Lord, don’t let anything happen to Him. Lord, you know people will say we oughtn’t to have sent Him. Year after year the Whipple’s condition slowly dwindles. Adna and Emly move to the city for jobs, and He gets more chores placed upon his shoulders. One winter the boy slipped on some ice and fell over and started having convulsions. From then on He had to stay in bed. His legs swelled up and his condition didn’t improve. With the Whipples on their last legs, the doctor suggested they put the boy into the County Home. Mrs. Whipple, still worried about what people will say, refuses to see the boy go. She thinks that with Adna and Emlys’ help the family will be able to get back on their feet by next summer and take care of the boy. Eventually Mrs. Whipple understands what has to be done. Her neighbor and the doctor drive Mrs. Whipple and Him to the hospital. On the ride to the hospital He starts to cry. This is when Mrs. Whipple realizes that He is going away forever. His tears signify that maybe He knew that He was going away and He was finally happy; Happy to get away from the distortion and confusion of his parents. Ventilation Essay Ventilation is the mechanical process whereby air is taken into and out of the lungs. Situations in which a patient might require venitlatory support range from apnea to patients experiencing depressed respiratory function. If the patients rate of breathing decreases significantly it can lead to hypercarbia, hypoxia, a lowered pH level and a decrease in respiratory minute volume. This can result in cardiac or respiratory arrest if it isnt corrected. Expired air ventilation has been accepted as the technique of choice since the late 1950s.It has been shown to be an effective practice for both professionals and lay persons including young children over 5 years of age. Ventilation using the expired air of the rescuer can be applied to the mouth or nose of the adult victim and to the mouth and nose of the infant. Mouth-to-Mouth ventilation and Mouth-to-Nose ventilation can provide effective ventilatory support to a patient. A major advantage of these methods of ventilation is that no equ ipment is required to effectively offer ventilatory support to the patient. However, the disadvantage of these methods of ventilatory support are that both methods only offer a limited oxygen supply due to the fact that oxygen expired from the rescuer will only contain 17 percent oxygen. Mouth-to-Mask Ventilation or Pocket Mask Ventilation A clear, plastic, molded facemask similar to that used in anesthesia may be used to provide mouth to mask ventilation. A unidirectional valve diverts the patients expired air away from the rescuer and traps any macroscopic particles emerging from the patient. This valve improves the aesthetics and reduces risk of cross infection. The mouth to mask method is a two handed technique which produces a better seal than that obtained during single-person bag-valve-mask ventilation. As with mouth-to-mouth ventilation it is possible to generate high tidal volumes, high airway pressures and increase the risk of gastric inflation. The addition of a port for the administration of supplemental oxygen increases the inspired oxygen concentration. A variety of pocket masks are available. Some of these masks are disposed of after the first use while others may be used many times. Most are small and compact enough to fit in a pocket and may be carried with the paramedic. The pocket mask allows an oxygen flow rate of 10 liters per minute. This rate combined with mouth-to-mouth breathing of the rescuer yields an inspired oxygen rate of about 50 percent. This is a significantly higher oxygen concentration level than delivered through the mouth-to-mouth or mouth-to-nose method. Inexpensive protection devices made from a piece of plastic film with a valvular orifice to cover the mouth and nose will provide protection and reduce aesthetic worries of direct contact with patients vomitus, saliva, sputum or blood. The main disadvantage is that the film device requires repositioning for each sequence of breaths. In the community the bystander is likely to be a relative, friend or colleague of the victim and resuscitative efforts should not be deterred by the unavailability of a protective device, as the risk is very small. Both inlet and outlet valves should be of robust construction, competent to prevent rebreathing or leaks, incapable of malfunction or jamming with a fresh gas flow (of oxygen) up to 15L/min. The valves should be easy to take apart, clean and reassem ble (except in disposable models); incorrect reassembly should be impossible. The inlet valve should be capable of being fitted with a filter (to exclude noxious gases) and an oxygen reservoir bag. The patient valve should have standard ISO 15/22 mm fittings. The patient valve should incorporate, or be capable of being fitted with, a PEEP valve. The bag should be capable of delivering a tidal volume of up to 1500 ml in the adult version and ventilation rates of up to 45/min in the pediatric version. Infant, pediatric and adult versions of the device should be available. The device should function adequately during all common environmental conditions and temperature extremes. When used by one person, a considerable degree of skill is required to maintain a patent airway and gas-tight seal with one hand, while squeezing the bag with the other. This is only likely to be achieved by someone who regularly uses a bag-valve-mask device. Too much air leak will result in hypoventilation, whi le excessive tidal volumes may result in gastric insufflation and increased risk of regurgitation. If ventilation has to continue with a bag-valve-mask, the two-person technique is preferable; one person holds the facemask in place using both hands and an assistant squeezes the bag. In this way a better seal is achieved, the jaw thrust maneuver is more easily maintained and the patients lungs can be ventilated more effectively. The demand valve device is also commonly referred to as the manually triggered oxygen powered breathing device. This device will transport 100 percent oxygen to a patient at its maximum flow rate (40L per minute). This system consists of a high-pressure tube, which connects to an oxygen supply. A push lever or button easily activates the valve causing it to open and thus, supplying oxygen to the patient. Due to technological advances, compact mechanical ventilators are now available for pre-hospital use. Mechanical ventilators provide a number of advantages over other types of ventilatory support discussed previously. Mechanical ventilation is lightweight and compact which makes it convenient and very easy to use while transporting the patient to the hospital. Secondly, they are an improvement over the bag-valve device in maintaining minute volume. The mechanical ventilation system is also able to endure extreme temperatures. Temperatures ranging from 30 degrees Fahrenheit to 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Another advantage of mechanical ventilation is that most systems are typically equipped with both an adjustable ventilatory rate and tidal volume. This will allow the machine to function intermittently, reverting to controlled mechanical ventilation in patients who are not breathing. Some are contain a pop-off valve that prevents pressure-related injuries. A pop-off valve can prove to be detrimental in situations where the patient is suffering from a pulmonary contusion, bronchospasm, cardiogenic pulmonary edema, adult respiratory distress syndrome or disorders in which high levels of pressure in the airway must be surmounted.In closing, there are several effective methods of supplying respiratory support to patients. With this in mind, what about the rights of American businesses? Individual human rights versus the businesses rights? Alternatively, how the constitutional right affects a business? In today’s workplaces, businesses have to not only deal with protecting employees from harassment from other employees but also protect themselves from civil lawsuits that may arise because of harassment issues. Does the first amendment to the United States Constitution truly give people the right of free speech? The first amendment to the United States Constitution states that â€Å"Congress shall make no law†¦abridging the freedom of speech† (Mount, p. 11, 2007). Rarely have courts infringed on this clear-cut constitutional right but does this clear-cut constitutional right give one person the authority to harass another? Freedom of speech is exactly that freedom to say whatever a person wants, whenever a person wants and to whomever a person wants, right? Living in such a free democratic society enables every American freedom to do many things but there must be some boundaries a person cannot crossover. Workplace conflict and harassment issues happen when boundaries are not enough. In the workplace, a person should be able to work in an environment free from harassment and unsolicited remarks and because companies share a responsibility to assure employees work in a harassment free setting, companies become liable when such events happen. â€Å"In 2003 a California appeals court held an employer liable for failing to control the abusive speech of one of its employees† but doesn’t the first Amendment give us the right to free speech (Hammond, Kleiner, p. 6, 2003)? In an effort to answer this question a person may also wonder just how free speech crosses the line to harassment. Attempting to answer this question, the Ninth Circuit court of appeals in San Francisco ruled that â€Å"if the speech was intended to cause offense, it was harassment and therefore not protected under the first amendment† (Hammond, Kleiner, p. 4). In Near v. Minnesota (1931) 283 U. S. 697, 713. freedom of speech restraints became relevant and important. Saying whatever you want to say is one thing but saying it directly to another person with intent to cause harassment is another. Businesses must secure a harassment free environment for all employees and when freedom of speech restraints are relaxed a little too much that b usiness can be held liable when an employee develops a problem working in that kind of environment. In today’s workplace, harassment laws are just as relevant as the free speech amendment. Employers have an obligation to prevent harassment in the workplace while creating equality and security. â€Å"The Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII’)† clearly provides that the â€Å"public policy of this state that it is necessary to protect and safeguard the right and opportunity of all persons to seek, obtain, and hold employment without discrimination or abridgment on account of race, religious creed, color, national origin, ancestry, physical disability, mental disability, medical condition, marital status, sex, age, or sexual orientation† (Workplace Conflict, (2005). In the 1993 case between Harris v. Forklift Systems, Inc., the United States Supreme Court declared that working in a environment of hostility and harassment is a clear violation of the FEHA and Title VII’ Acts. Because our lega l system maintains a ‘no tolerance level’ for businesses found liable for violating these important acts penalties can be huge (Workplace Conflict). According to the book The Legal Environment, â€Å"the American legal system is one of the most comprehensive, fair and democratic systems of law ever developed and enforced† (Cheeseman,  ¶ 1, p. 4, 2007). With respect in recognizing harassment issues, the legal system protects that right by penalizing business with monetary fines. Damages to plaintiffs can differ from case to case. Depending on the nature of the harassment and level of the acts, monetary damages could result in millions of dollars. Along with the businesses, having to payout money there may also be strict stipulations that the business must abide by. Imposing injunctions or forbidding contact between plaintiff and the accused is also often the case and if the company doesn’t abide by the stipulations set forth by the court, the business could be found to be in contempt of court, which would require heavier penalties. While the first amendment to the United States Constitution was written with intentions to protect everyone’s constitutional right to freedom of speech it must be recognized that since its creation many things have changed. The Secret by Petrarch Essay During the Middle Ages, European thinkers began to examine the world of humanistic thought.   While this way of thinking was not new and humanism was pondered by ancient thinkers thousands of years earlier, the thing that made this line of thought so unique in Europe during this time was the strong influence of the Church.   Thinkers like the Italian Francesco Petrarch and borrowed many philosophical elements from the Church and classical humanism, trying to synthesize the City of God with the City of the World.    However, because of their rejection of the synthesis between these two worlds, the Church did their best to ensure that such acceptance of humanistic thought had no place in Church doctrine, and Petrarch was caught between his deep love of faith and his passion for reason. Despite his love of God and his desire to live a life ruled by adherence to reason, Petrarch must seemingly choose between the two and sacrifice his free will for his religious faith, but he instead chooses to attempt to synthesize them; Petrarch’s basic teachings in â€Å"The Secret† seek to reflect that a synthesis between faith and reason is possible and both the City of God and the City of the World knowable, reflecting an emerging line of humanistic thought of his age that increasingly caused tension between the thinkers of the time and the Church.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Petrarch was a renowned fourteenth-century poet and scholar, and his contributions to European culture could end with these accomplishments.   What he contributed to the world of Christian humanism would also go onto inspire generations that followed and lead to the Renaissance.   In his â€Å"Secret Book† Petrarch brings up the classical argument that God gave humans the intellectual potential to figure out the world for themselves. Petrarch is unhappy and St. Augustine suggests his unhappiness may be caused by his acceptance of the City of the World and his neglect for the City of God.   St. Augustine recalls the words of classical philosopher Cicero: â€Å"They could look at nothing with their mind, but judged everything by the sight of their eyes; yet a man of any greatness of understanding is known by his detaching his thought from objects of sense, and his meditations from the ordinary track in which others move† (Petrarch). Petrarch experienced this detaching as a man of greatness of understanding, and the parallel between his time and thought with the ancient philosopher help show that human intelligence and reason continued to evolve.   The dilemma comes in trying to figure out whether this knowledge is attained by man himself or given by God, and whether the material world and the senses are as valuable as the promise of an afterworld. One of the main problems that Petrarch experiences in his â€Å"Secret Book† is the place of free will within faith.   Augustine reminds Petrarch that he chooses free will even with his faith: â€Å"No man can become or can be unhappy unless he so chooses† (Petrarch).   Petrarch comes to realize that it his choice for things in the City of the World, including his love for women and material things, and the only thing that makes these bad is that they prevent him from knowing the eternal City of God. To both Augustine and Petrarch, reason did not necessarily need to erode faith in God, but could go a long way in reinforcing it and in essence proving it correct.   His equal love for both and his desire to retain them as significant aspects of his life were keys to understanding his position in his writing.   In his book, Petrarch sought to synthesize his worldly thoughts and action with those of his faith, and his humanistic views were largely frowned upon by the Church, though they were nothing more than a precursor for the thought that would come to dominate Europe. The basic teachings of Petrarch not only borrow from Christian and humanistic thought from the past, but attempt to show that God granted men the ability to reason and free will to be pursued if they so choose.   While man may pursue with passion the many elements of being free, including worldly pleasures outside of faith, they run the risk of alienating themselves from God’s world, which was portrayed by the Church as the only singular dictator of human action.   By stating humans have free will within the confines of religious faith was an extremely controversial and revolutionary line of thinking for his Petrarch’s time, and reflected the growing tension within society. Though the Church’s power was fully realized and would not be relinquished, many people would use Petrarch’s arguments about free will to help liberate them from the often oppressive doctrines of the Church, while still managing to retain the love of God and their religious faith.   Prior to Petrarch’s work, this concept of synthesizing faith with reason was not only frowned upon by church leaders, but almost unheard of in a highly Christianized world. As the lone authority on matters of faith, morality, and will, the Church would continue to fight against any and all lines of thought that remotely challenged the sovereignty of its rule over the citizenry of Europe, but the growing humanism after the Black Death made many men like Petrarch question humanity’s place and purpose in the universe. Because of the legacy of the Church and the importance of religious thinking, there was really only one place such thought could begin from, and religious scholasticism was the foundation for all thought that would eventually supplant it, much like the line of thought espoused by Petrarch.   While Petrarch was seen as challenging the authority of the Church, and even the authority of God as the lone dictator of human freedom, he was also stating that the free will humans enjoyed was granted by the very same God. Petrarch was a devout Christians that also contributed greatly to the growth of humanism.   His personal dilemmas were centered around his beliefs that the City of the World must be known as much as the City of God, and his love for each was too strong to deny one for the other.   While too much knowledge of the City of the World could lead people to avoid learning about the City of God, it was also important to understand the world and the people in it as a way of understanding God’s truth.   Petrarch was also alive during a strange time of great tension, where the Church was largely corrupt and in turmoil, Europe was emerging from the Dark Ages, and the growing humanism was slowly changing the ideas of all people. Petrarch believed in the goodness and potential of people, and had faith in man’s ability to understand the world, which is all he sought to do.   The rejection by the Church of the synthesis of the City of the World and that of God is related to its fear that people will not follow its doctrines, and is nothing more than the last gasps of a power structure that could not hold a monopoly over the will and the faith of men and women across Europe. For men like Petrarch, humans can have a relationship with God and learn his truths by using their own reason and intellect.   The rejection of the synthesis of the two cities is nothing more than an attempt by the Church to keep control over the masses of people.   But, with the help and inspiration of men like Petrarch, people would eventually realize the benefit and power of their own free will and seek to understand the City of God and the City of the World alike.
